Dennis Raymond Bergman, 70, of New London, died Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington. He was born December 6, 1948 in Axtell, Kansas to Wilfred and Rosella Schmitz Bergman. On May 4, 1968 he married Judy K.Rettele in Ft. Polk, Louisiana.
He was a member of the last graduating class of St. Benedict, Kansas High School. He served as an Army medic during the Viet Nam war from 1968 - 1970 where he was wounded and later received a purple heart. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the VFW. For 37 years, he was employed as a District Sales Manager for Ecolab, Inc. retiring in 2013. Dennis had a great love for classic cars and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with his grandchildren; building extravagant Christmas light displays and was an ice cream and NASCAR enthusiast.
Besides his wife, Judy of New London, Dennis is survived by two daughters, Angie (Dave) Crandall of Urbandale and Cherie (Tom) Watznauer of New London; one son Kevin (Allison) Bergman of New London; nine grandchildren; six sisters; five brothers; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Loran Bergman.
The funeral service for Mr. Bergman will be held at 10:30 Wednesday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant with Father Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery with military rites by Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Elliott Chapel with the family receiving friends from 5 – 7 PM. There will be a 6:45 rosary service followed by 7 pm vigil service Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for his grandchildren's education.
