Wendell Verne Williams, 95, of Danville, died Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. He was born April 24, 1923 in Danville to Corliss Frank and Nettie Esther Elliott Williams. On September 5, 1942 he married Ruth Winona Wagner in Danville.
He was a graduate of Danville High School; joined the Army during World War II and served with the 91st Infantry Division in Italy until the end of the war; he then farmed for 15 years; was a 1961 graduate of Prairie Bible Institute in Canada; and spent 25 years doing missionary work in Ireland retiring in 1988.
He had a lot of memories and enjoyed writing about them in prose and poetry. He also rejoiced in God's goodness in allowing 95 years of life and many descendants. He was a member of Harmony Bible Church.
Wendell is survived by his wife of Danville; one daughter, Janet (Kerry) Gibson of Appleton, Wisconsin; six sons, Linn (Carolyn), Russell (Kathy), Ross (Tammy), all of Danville, Jim of Florida, Nathan (Laura) of Burlington, and Trevor (Wendy) of Bettendorf; also dad to Tony (Sheri) Gumley of Alaska and Paul (Joyce) Montgomery of Kansas; and numerous children from Ovaca Manor and Drewstown House, both in Ireland; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; sister, Shirley Bailey of New London; nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Neil Williams; one brother, Russell who was killed in the European Theatre during WWII; one sister, Naomi James; and two brothers-in-law, Tim Bailey and Kenny James.
The funeral service for Wendell Williams will be 10:00 am Friday at Harmony Bible Church with Pastor Nathan Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, rural Danville. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, at Elliott Chapel with the family present to greet friends from 5 – 7 PM.
A memorial has been established for Harmony Bible Church Mission Fund.
