The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission held its month meeting April 17 at the courthouse in Mt. Pleasant. A Historic Resource Development Grant (HRDP) grant has been submitted to the State Historical Society of Iowa for nominating properties and sites to the National Register of Historic Places in Wayland and Jefferson Township. Four properties and one historic district are sites included in the grant. Grants are awarded in late June.
The Commission is working on updating an inventory of the last remaining country schoolhouses in Henry County. The last update was conducted by Don Young in 1997. Several buildings have been torn down since the last inventory but a good share still exist as homes and farm buildings.
The month of May is Preservation Month and commissioners are planning to attend the Winfield Museum’s 20th anniversary celebration on May 25 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Pat White from the Henry Co. Heritage Trust announced the release of their latest book Remembering: Civil War Impact on Henry County, Iowa, now available for purchase.
The next meeting is May 15 at the courthouse at 1 p.m.
