It has been a rough couple of weeks for high school sports in the state of Iowa. As we head into postseason play, the weather seems to be getting more and more destructive to the high school schedule.
Henry County had three postseason events iced out this week. Two regional girls’ basketball games were moved back and one wrestling team was unable to travel to its regional dual site.
The wrestling team was New London. The Tigers were meant to go to Lisbon on Wednesday for the regional duals but the icey roads made it tough for New London to transport the wrestlers to the site.
New London was forced to forfeit the duals meet, because the IAHSAA didn’t call for the meet to be postponed to another date. Superintendent Chad Wahls closed all facilities to be closed, saying in a release that every decision is made on a “safety first” basis for the students.
All three Henry County small school girl basketball teams were scheduled to play their first round regional tournament games on Thursday night, but all area games were postponed. WACO will not host Winfield-Mt. Union tonight (Friday) at 5 p.m., and New London will play at Notre Dame on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.
With plenty more playoff basketball games upcoming in the next two weeks, district and state wrestling going on the next two weekends and postseason bowling starting next week, area fans hope the cold and ice can show a little mercy on Southeast Iowa.
