IW baseball returns to action, falls

JACKSON, Miss. — The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team returned to the field on Wednesday, but the bats didn’t quite wake up in time. IW played Belhaven University, dropping the game 7-1. Five different Belhaven pitchers combined to hold the Tigers to just three hits.

Belhaven opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, putting up three runs to take an early 3-0 lead. The Tigers cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning when Minami Matsumoto knocked in Dominic Gerace on a sacrifice fly.

Belhaven scored the next four runs of the ballgame. They scored one run in the fourth inning, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Jack De Burgh had two of IW’s three hits in the loss. He went 2-3 on the day. The only other hit of the day went to Nick Salas, who finished 1-2 with two walks.

Eve Swinson started the game for IW, and ended up taking the loss. He went 5.2 innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and one walk. He struck out three batters. Mitch Wilcox threw 1.1 innings, giving up one earned run on two hits, while striking out one. Nick Fencl threw one shutout inning and gave up just one hit, while striking out one.

The Tigers have two games left before their home opener next week. IW will play Hendrix College in Conway, Ark. on Thursday, March 14, and then travel to Macomb, Ill. to take on Maccomb on Tuesday, March 19.
