The Tiger softball ended their spring break trip with games against Morrisville State University and Shawnee State University this weekend. Iowa Wesleyan split, winning 15-7 to start the day, but fell to the Bears of Shawnee State 6-1.
After a scoreless first inning against Morrisville State, the Tiger offense came alive and plated eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Emilee Rooney put IW on the board with a double to center field which brought home Morgan Christner and Alex Eyman. Addison Westercamp followed with single that drove in McKena Woolery for the third run of the inning.
Emma McDanel and the Iowa Wesleyan defense struggled a bit in the top of the third inning. Morrisville State scored five runs to cut the Tiger lead to just three runs, but IW answered once again with another big bottom half. Addison Westercamp hit an RBI double with one out, and Emmy Rodriguez reached on an error on the next at bat which allowed Westercamp to score, bringing the score to 10-5. After back to back walkes, Emma McDanel hit a line drive to right field which brought in two runs. Alex Eyman drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two run double of her own.
Morrisville State put two runs across the plate in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 14-7, but were held scoreless in the top of the fifth. Eyman ended the game when she came to the plate with two outs for the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth. She hit a single to left field to bring home McDanel and give IW their seventh win of the season.
Eyman finished the game 4-4 from the plate with three RBIs, while Addison Westercamp went 3-3 at the dish and drove in two. McDanel pitched five innings and struck out seven batters to pick up her second win of the season.
In their final game of the day, Iowa Wesleyan faced off against NAIA opponent Shawnee State. The Tiger defense hurt themselves with four errors against the Bears. The game was scoreless for the first two innings, but Shawnee State scored three runs in the third and followed with three runs in the fourth and fifth inning combined.
Iowa Wesleyan recorded six hits in the game, but it wasn’t until the sixth inning that they were able to get on the board. Ashley Machholz reached on a fielder’s choice and came around to score when Emma McDanel hit a single to right field. The Tigers were unable to push any more runs across the plate and fell for the fourth time during the spring break trip.
McDanel led the way with two hits and the lone RBI for Iowa Wesleyan. McKena Woolery recorded the team’s only double of the game. Morgan Christner struck out seven batters through six innings of work and finished with two earned runs.
Iowa Wesleyan heads home with a 7-4 overall record. They will have a week off before opening conference play on Saturday, March 23 at Principia College. The doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m. in Elsah, Illinois.
