KEOKUK — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ soccer team made their debut in the IGHSAU top-15 rankings this week and celebrated on Thursday with another Southeast Conference win. The Panthers, now ranked No. 11 in Class 2A, smoked Keokuk 7-0 for their fourth win in a row.
Anna Ostby started the scoring just a minute and a half into the game, putting in a goal off a Sydney Doak assist. Kaela Welcher scored shortly after that, tapping in a goal to make it 2-0.
Doak scored her first goal of the game a ltitle later, scoring from a through ball by Mellanie Vargas. The rain slowed down the Panther offense for the rest of the first half but it was 3-0 at the break.
Keokuk nearly stopped the shutout with a penalty kick early in the second half, but the Chiefs failed to convert. The Panthers had their own PK opportunity a few minutes later, and Mary West scored to make it 4-0.
Doak scored her second goal later in the half, getting an assist from Lizzie Litchfield. Welcher made it 6-0 off an Ostby assist, and Litchfield scored the seventh goal on a long range shot that sailed past the Keokuk keeper.
The Panthers are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC. They’ll host Ft. Madison on Monday, April 15.
