NEW LONDON -- New London and WACO wrestling took to the mats on Thursday night at the Tigers’ home triangular. After both teams made quick work of Lone Tree, the two showed down for the final dual of the night. New London took it on the last match, winning 36-33 to sweep the day.

“It’s always nice when you can win in front of your fans in your home gym,” Coach Mark Chiri said. “But I’m just looking for improvement for our guys. There were a couple matches where we outmatched them or they outmatched us, but I thought overall in the tight matches, we wrestled pretty well.”

WACO won the first dual of the day, 54-24 over Lone Tree. Most of the matches were forfeits, and the two teams split the only two showdowns of the day. Jaden Williams won by pinfall at 138 lbs., pinning Matthew Carlson in 44 seconds. Lone Tree’s Will Hotz pinned WACO’s Tomasso Maestrocci in 1:34.

New London took to the mats in the second dual and, like WACO, had no problem putting away the Lions. Gabe Carter and Cameron Raines both picked up pins. Marcel Lopez won by major decision and Jordan Johnson won by decision. The only Lone Tree win was by Matthew Carlson at 138 lbs. All the other matches were forfeits.

The Tigers won the first three in their dual against the Warriors. After Gavin Holmes (182 lbs.) opened it up with a forfeit win, Raines (195 lbs.) and Jaxon Allen (220 lbs.) picked up pins to make it three-in-a-row for New London. WACO’s Kade Mckinney responded with a pin of his own at 285 lbs., and it was 18-6 in favor of the Tigers

Lopez earned a forfeit win at 106 lbs., for another New London win. The next two matches were double forfeit, and WACO won the next four.

WACO’s Jonah Clark won by forfeit at 126 lbs., to cut the New London lead to 24-12. Jalen Collins won the 132 lbs. match via pinfall, in 1:31. Ben Schlatter won the 138 lbs. match by foreit, and Williams gave the Warriors a 30-26 lead with a pin in 145 lbs., winning it in 1:26.

New London’s Currey Jacobs won by pin at 152 lbs., pinning his man in 1:16. That tied the dual up at 30-30 with just two matches to go.

WACO’s Brice Crawford took on Johnson of New London in an intense 160 lbs. match. In the best match of the dual, Crawford beat Johnson on a late escape, winning by a 3-2 decision.

“He went out and went six minutes as hard as he could,” said WACO head coach Seth Pugh about Crawford’s win. “I didn’t tell him, ‘Hey we have to have a pin here.’ I wanted him to win the match for himself, and he won it for himself, won it for his team, and I was very impressed with him.”

The three-point decision put WACO up 33-30, but New London still had captain Gabe Carter coming at 170 lbs. He pinned Maestrocci in 1:18 to pick up six points and win the meet for the Tigers.

“He’s one of our captains, and his dad announces for us, so it was nice that it all worked out,” Coach Chiri said. “It’s nice when you’ve got your horse power at the end.”

The Tigers got a little revenge on a 43-42 loss at WACO earlier in the year, but Warrior coach Seth Pugh says despite the loss, he thinks his team had a better night on the mats than last time the two met up.

“We just gave up a few extra points here and there,” Pugh said. “Overall I think we had more matches this time, and I actually think we wrestled better than we did last time.”
