NEW LONDON — The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ golf team outlasted New London to make it out of Friday’s sectional tournament at Deer Run Golf Course. The Wolves finished second, with a stroke count of 353, and New London was out of the qualifying two witha 381 for second. Sigourney also advanced, finishing at 346 to win the meet.
The Wolves had three of the top five finishers in the meet. Nolan Ross placed third overall with an 83, shooting a 38 in his first round and a 45 in his second. Jarod Kadel was fourth overall, shooting a 47 in the first and a 42 in the second for an 89, and Graham Hagge shot a 90, going 46 in the first round and 44 in the second.
Jacob Kongable was the fourth W-MU scorer, shooting 91 to take seventh place overall. He shot 45 in the first round and 46 in the second. Brady Loyd shot a 97 (49, 48) and Noah Freeman finished at 100 (54, 46).
New London’s Clayton Phillips did qualify for sectionals as an individual. He shot a 41 in the first round and a 39 in the second to end the day at 80. That was second place overall, behind only Sigourney’s Dustin Haines.
Gabe Carter finished 11th overall, shooting a 95. He finished at 44 on the front nine and 51 in the second. Dustin Nehring went 54 and 48 to finish at 102. Ethan Streeter shot a 51 and a 53 to score 104.
Tyler Henecke finished just outside of the Tigers’ scoring four with a 105, shooting a 55 and a 50. Wyatt Haes shot a 65 and a 55 to end the day at 120.
The W-MU boys, along with Phillips, are at Blue Top Ridge golf co urse in Riverside today (Wednesday) for the district tournament. That meet began at 9 a.m.
